Onychomycosis
Nail fungus: why it appears, why it does not go away on its own and why, with a proper diagnosis and medical treatment, it can be cured.
No es solo un problema estético: es una infección que no se quita sola y que, con diagnóstico y tratamiento médico, tiene cura.
Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nails, and it is far more common than it seems, especially on the feet. The nail changes colour —yellowish, whitish or brown—, thickens, becomes brittle and may lift from the nail bed. It is not just a cosmetic problem: over time it can hurt when walking and become an entry point for other skin infections.
Fungi thrive on moisture, closed shoes worn for many hours and walking barefoot in public places such as gyms, showers and swimming pools. Because nails grow slowly and the fungus is persistent, the infection does not clear on its own, and unsupervised home remedies rarely work: they only delay real treatment. With a correct diagnosis, the treatment a doctor prescribes —topical, laser or oral medication— and the patience to wait for healthy nail to replace the infected one, it can be cured.
