Ketogenic diet
What happens in the body when carbohydrates are cut out, and why the keto diet worries cardiologists.
El problema no es la cetosis en sí, sino el exceso de grasas saturadas que dispara el colesterol LDL y la formación de placa en las arterias.
When you stop eating carbohydrates, the body runs out of its everyday glucose and the liver starts burning fat at high speed to make an emergency fuel: ketone bodies. That state is called ketosis.
The real problem is not ketosis itself but what usually comes with it. Sustaining the diet means eating a lot of saturated fat, which drives up LDL cholesterol particles. The more particles circulate, the easier it is for them to seep into the artery wall, oxidise and form plaque (atherosclerosis). Because of that rise in cardiovascular risk, the American Heart Association ranks the keto diet among the least advisable for long-term heart health. Anyone following it should have their cholesterol checked.
