Anaemia
Constant tiredness, dizziness and pallor: what happens when red blood cells or haemoglobin fall short, and why iron deficiency is the most common cause.
Cansancio constante, mareos y palidez: cuando faltan glóbulos rojos o hemoglobina, músculos y cerebro trabajan sin suficiente oxígeno.
Anaemia occurs when the body has fewer healthy red blood cells, or less haemoglobin, than it needs. Haemoglobin is the protein that carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the tissues; without enough oxygen, muscles and brain work at their limit, and constant tiredness, dizziness and pallor appear.
The most common cause worldwide is iron deficiency (iron-deficiency anaemia), but it can also be due to a lack of vitamin B12 or folic acid, blood loss or chronic disease. That is why it should not be treated blindly: a complete blood count confirms the anaemia and points to its cause.
